Things to Think About When You Buy Specialty Contact Lenses
There are two major types of special effect contact lenses – round lenses that are like the regular prescription contact lenses that only cover the colored area of the eye and, scleral lenses that cover most of the visible portion of the eye—some white is still visible in the corners of the eye.
If you aren’t used to wearing contacts, you may want to at least start out with the regular round lenses. Although they create a terrific effect, the larger scleral Halloween contacts are more difficult to wear and put in and take out. And, they are much more expensive. Maybe you could get by with the semi-scleral lenses, which are a bit smaller and therefore easier to put in and take out. And, they’re cheaper.
Special effect lenses are opaque which means the lens completely blocks the color of you eye showing through. So no matter what color you eyes are, you can wear any color special effect lens. As far as being able to see out opaque lenses, either the center of the lens will be clear or the lens color will allow you to see through it.
If you already wear contact lenses or glasses, you’ll be happy to know that you can buy prescription specialty lenses. Otherwise you can get plano or zero power lenses.
Consider this…
- Who has the best designs or has the specific designs you are looking for?
- How much are you willing to pay for special effect contacts? Prices range from $25 per contact to hundreds per contact.
- Do you need corrective lenses or do you want non-prescription lenses?. Some specialty lens manufactures require a prescription from your optician even if you do not require corrective lenses. That will certainly add to the price of the lenses.
- How often and how long will you be wearing them? Lenses come in both monthly disposable and as annual replacement lenses.
- Are the lenses you want to buy FDA approved? You will want to be sure that the paints on the lenses are safe.
- Most sales are final. There is no return policy.

How to Care for Specialty Lenses
- First and most importantly, when wearing the lenses pay attention to how your eyes look and feel. If your eyes are irritated or look red, take out the lenses immediately. The most important thing here is to protect your eyes. Keep in mind that if the lenses you are wearing are opaque lenses or mirrored contact lenses, it may be difficult to see the actual condition of your eye.
- Don’t wear specialty lenses for more than 6-8 hours. They block oxygen to your eyes.
- Properly care for your lenses to maintain their cleanliness and to protect your eyes. They should only be used with solutions recommended by the manufacturer. Follow the directions on the solution box for specific lens care instructions.
- Don’t share your specialty contact lenses with anyone!
